UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Three Richmond student-athletes, junior Brooke Boncher of the women's swimming and diving squad, and sophomore Amanda Russell and senior Brett Walton, both of the track and field squad, were named to the Atlantic 10 Conference's Academic All-Conference teams, league officials announced Tuesday.
For Boncher it is her first time to be named to the Women's Swimming Academic All-Conference team. The West Newbury, Mass., native recorded 23 individual first-place finish out of a possible 25 events. Boncher also set four Richmond records during the 2004-05 season including the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back and 100 fly. At this season's Atlantic 10 Championships she was part of three Conference records including the individual 100 fly, the 400 medley relay and the 200 medley relay. Boncher has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 50 free and 100 fly and may take part in the 100 free at the NCAA meet, March 17-19, in West Lafayette, Ind.
Russell, the Richmond record holder in the 5000 meters, is making her first appearance on the Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Conference list. The North Bay, Ontario, native broke the two-year Richmond record in the 5000 meters Jan. 14 at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a time of 17.11.80. She eclipsed the old record, held by Lyndsey Webber since 2003, by almost 18 seconds (17:29.53). Russell went on to place third in the 5000 meters (17:17.40) and fourth in the 3000 meters (10:08.50) at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Walton, now a three-time Indoor Academic All-Conference selection, used the indoor slate to prepare for the upcoming outdoor decathlon season.
