CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The top-ranked University of Virginia women's lacrosse team (3-1) broke open a close game with a three-goal outburst in a span of 1:44 to defeat Richmond 11-5 on Sunday in Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers held Richmond (0-4) to their lowest offensive output of the year despite four goals from junior Caroline McGuire.
Molly Urlock started the first scoring sequence as she picked up an overthrow on the restraining line and the Cavaliers brought the ball upfield where Tyler Leachman raced in to score at 2:24, putting the Hoos on top 1-0. Richmond answered with the first of McGuire's four goals, scoring 2:04 after Leachman.
The Cavaliers responded as Courtney Young won a race for possession of a loose ball in Virginia's defensive third. On the clear, the Cavaliers took the ball upfield where Jess Wasilewski fed a cutting Cary Chasney for a goal at 15:46.
The Spiders won the ensuing draw but Kim Connors caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball, which she carried to the offensive end where Meredith Lazarus dumped the ball ahead to Leachman, who scored her second goal of the game 25 seconds after Chasney. Leachman took the next draw and won control on a false start by Richmond. In the offensive zone, the ball fell to the ground and an alert Leachman picked up the ball right outside the goal circle and threw it back in the cage for her fourth consecutive hat trick, scoring 1:19 after her second goal.
The teams battled back and forth for the next 11 minutes before Amy Appelt caused a turnover on an attempted clear and brought the ball back into the fan where she fed the ball to Leachman, who scored her fourth goal of the game at 29:09, giving the Cavaliers a 5-1 lead. McGuire won the ensuing draw and took it right to the cage, scoring 17 seconds after Leachman for a halftime score of 5-2.
Pinney caused one of her turnovers as Richmond ran a transition at the start of the second half and got the ball to Appelt, who fed Leachman as she cut down the arc to score her fifth goal of the game at 32:08, making the score 6-2. Chasney won the next draw and brought the ball upfield where again Appelt fed Leachman as she cut to the cage. Leachman's sixth goal came 57 seconds after her fifth and gave the Cavaliers a 7-2 lead.
McGuire caused a turnover on the next draw control and brought the ball back upfield where she cut across the arc and scored her third goal of the game to stop the Virginia run. Richmond controlled the next draw and after both teams had a possession, junior Sara Allen scored on an unsettled situation to cut the deficit to 7-4 at 37:54. Thirteen minutes later McGuire scored her fourth goal of the game on a cut down the arc to pull the Spiders back within two at 7-5 with 9:27 to play.
Virginia answered as Connors won the draw and took it straight to the cage where she scored 13 seconds after McGuire to move the margin back to three at 8-5. Leachman scored her seventh goal of the game at 55:05 on a crease roll to give the Cavaliers a 9-5 lead. Richmond gained possession of the ball and ran a break to the cage, but Pinney drew a dangerous propelling foul and started a transition to the other end, where Megan O'Malley scored her first career goal off a ground ball that came as a result of a save of a Leachman shot. Wasilewski won the ensuing draw control and got the ball to Connors, who fed a cutting Nikki Lieb, who scored 19 seconds after O'Malley.
