Spider Baseball Falls At Old Dominion, 16-4

NORFOLK, Va. - The Spider baseball squad managed to score just four runs on 11 hits Wednesday, falling to Old Dominion, 16-4, in Norfolk, Va. With the loss Richmond drops to 6-9 on the season and 1-3 on the road. The Monarchs snapped a four-game skid and improved to 13-10 on the year.
Richmond opened the game with a run in the first inning when junior Andrew Justice got hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI-double from freshman Joe Mahoney.
ODU rallied in its half of the first with three runs to take the lead off Spider starter, freshman Stephen Owens. The Monarchs homered then singled and followed with two consecutive run-scoring base hits.
Old Dominion piled it on in the second with a six-spot on five hits and two errors. Richmond pushed its second run across in the fifth, trailing 9-1. Junior Ben Zeskind drove in his eighth run of the season on a sac-fly to left with the bases loaded.
The Monarchs answered with a run in their half of the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a 14-2 lead. Richmond posted multiple runs in the top half of the seventh when sophomore Anthony Sandstrom belted his first career homerun over the leftfield wall to drive in two.
Again ODU answered with two of its own in the seventh to make the final 16-4. Owens suffered the loss working 4.0 innings, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on 13 hits and two walks. The righthander also struck out two.
The Spiders return home Thursday, March 16, to host Yale in a single game at Pitt Field. Freshman David Solan will make his first career start in the game scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
Game Notes
- Richmond garnered 11 hits for the fourth consecutive game. The last time the Spiders garnered at least two consecutive 10+ hit games was Feb. 20-23, against The Citadel (12) and VMI (11).
- The Spiders' five errors tied a season-high. Richmond committed five miscues in its win against The Citadel, Feb. 20.
- Sophomore Andrew Justice moved his season-long hit streak to eight games with a single in the seventh inning.
- Justice has now scored at least one run in the last five games.
- Sophomore Anthony Sandstrom garnered his first career homer in the seventh inning. The two-run shot gave the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native four RBI on the year.
- Sophomore Matt McKenna tied a career high with three hits on the day. The Richmond, Va., native posted three hits against Penn State, Mar. 21, 2004.
- Freshmen Alex Hale and Austin Reilly and Sandstrom each extended hit streaks to four games.
