WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Richmond's junior Brooke Boncher finished her second day of competition at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in a tie for sixth in the 100 fly with a school record time of 53.32. Boncher, who has one more event to swim (100 free) in tomorrow's final day, earned All-America status in the 100 fly with her finish tonight at the Purdue Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
"She just swam a great race tonight," head coach Matt Kredich said. "She was leading at the 50 mark with a split of 24.67. I am just really impressed with her determination and courage against a field which included two Olympians."
Boncher earned a spot in the Championship final heat this morning with a then-school record of 53.34 in the preliminary rounds. The West Newbury, Mass., native was seeded 13th in the event prior to the first day of NCAA competition Thursday.
Richmond's previous record was set by Boncher earlier this season when she automatically qualified for the NCAA's with a 53.67, Nov. 19, at the Terrapin Cup.
The junior has one more event remaining on her schedule at the NCAA meet. She will swim in the 100 free prelims Saturday morning at 11 a.m., and if she qualifies for the finals, will swim at approximately 5 p.m.
The 2005 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will be tape-delay televised Friday, March 25, at 2 p.m. on ESPN2. Portions of Boncher's races may be shown.
