Spiders Fall To Xavier, 73-64

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Stanley Burrell scored 24 points and Xavier's Musketeers hit 27-of-30 free throws -- 20-of-22 in the second half -- en route to a 73-64 win over the Richmond Spiders in Atlantic 10 Conference basketball.
While the Musketeers (15-11, 9-6) were hot at the free-throw line, the Spiders missed 12 of their first 18 before finishing 9-for-21.
The Musketeers scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed. Richmond pulled to 49-48 with 7:50 remaining in the game on a fast break by Jermaine Buckner. The Musketeers scored the next six points, four by Burrell.
The Spiders (12-14, 7-8) closed to 65-62 on Courtney Nelson's 3-pointer with 1:41 remaining. Burrell notched a 3-pointer with 1:08 left, and the Spiders could get no closer than five.
Burrell, a freshman guard, was 11-for-11 from the free-throw line and had seven rebounds and three steals. Will Caudle scored 12, while Brian Thornton and Justin Cage each chipped in with 10.
Jamaal Scott led the Spiders with 16 points, hitting 7-of-8 field goals. Kevin Steenberge added 13, and Nelson 11.
NOTES: Xavier now leads the all-time series 7-2, having won the last three against Richmond ... The Spiders are 0-4 against the Musketeers in the Robins Center ... The Spiders 10 steals equaled the second most of the season.
