WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Richmond freshman Johanna McKnight (Kenner, La.) came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points as the Spiders defeated St. Bonaventure 75-56 tonight in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championships. The third-seeded Spiders improve to 22-6 while St. Bonaventure, a six-seed, ends its season at 9-19.
The Spiders face #2 East Rhode Island in the quarterfinals tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m.
McKnight, who celebrated her 19th birthday today, was 5-9 from the field and connected on two three-point baskets. Junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) added 13 points and sophomore DeUnna Hendrix also contributed double-digit points with 12. Sophomore Kelly Roche (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) recorded a career-best four blocks. Nine players scored for Richmond.
The Bonnies were led by Audrey Latendresse's 13 points.
Richmond finished 8-11 from three-point range, shooting a season-high .727 from behind the arc. In addition, the Spiders rejected a season-high seven shots.
The Spiders jumped to a quick 8-2 lead but St. Bonaventure scored seven unanswered points and took a 9-8 lead four minutes into the game. Chapman and Hendrix combined to score Richmond's first 12 points, with both hitting a three-point basket. Richmond held the Boonies scoreless for five and a half minutes, forcing six turnovers in that span, and built a 25-11 advantage. The Spiders took their largest lead of e half (18) off a three from McKnight from the left baseline and held a 75-56 lead at the break.
In the second half, Richmond tallied the first seven points, and built a 20-point lead off a jumper from junior Alison Mitchell (Annandale, Va.). Richmond's largest lead (25) occurred at the 5:26 mark and the Spiders advanced with the 75-56 win.
