UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider baseball team had to wait three hours before opening its three-game series with St. Bonaventure, but could not muster up a run over seven innings, falling to the Bonnies, 1-0, Saturday at Pitt Field. The Spiders, who dropped their first conference game of the season and are now 6-1, fall to 13-10 overall, while St. Bonaventure improves to 10-7 and 1-3 in the A-10.
Back-to-back doubles to lead off the game proved to be all the Bonnies needed. Sophomore starter Rob Berzinskas gave up an 0-1 double to SBU's Dan Bratys to lead off the game. Bratys then scored on a 3-1 double to center from Joe Rizzo.
Richmond struggled early against St. Bonaventure's starter, Mike McCormack. Richmond managed only one hit over two and had stranded two going into the third.

The Spiders did, however, threaten in the third and fourth. Sophomore Anthony Sandstrom led-off the third with a single up the middle for Richmond's second hit of the game. After a failed attempt to move Sandstrom over, junior Ben Zeskind reached on a fielder's choice while Sandstrom was out on the play at second. Junior Andrew Justice looked to had push the tying run across with a single to leftfield, but Zeskind apparently missed the plate on his slide at home and was called out when he was tagged coming back to touch.
In the fourth, the Spiders again got the lead-off hitter on when freshman Joe Mahoney singled through the left side. A sac-bunt from sophomore Matt McKenna moved him over and freshman Drew Poiter later reached after getting hit. With one out and runners at first and second freshman Alex Hale roped a single through the right side. Mahoney came racing around third, but was thrown out at the plate on a frozen rope from rightfielder Brian Pellegrini.
Richmond failed to move runners past second the rest of the game and suffered only its second one-run loss of the season, and are now 6-2 in one-run contests. Berzinskas suffered the loss after working a seven-inning complete game, giving up one run on seven hits and fanning seven. McCormack earned the win by combining with Pellegrini for the six-hit shutout.
