UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman quarterback Levi Brown led consecutive scoring drives in his final two attempts to highlight Saturday's scrimmage played on campus at First Market Stadium. Brown, whose touchdowns went to Harry Wilson (51 yards) and Arman Shields (36 yards), finished the afternoon 11-for-13 for 173 yards.
Wilson, Shields and freshman tight end Joe Monteverde led the Spiders with four catches. Starting quarterback Stacy Tutt never caught rhythm, finishing 2-of-7 for nine yards, but ran for a team-best 13 yards on three carries.
Richmond's defense was led by linebacker Lance Gray who made five tackles and one pass break-up and interior lineman Dan Mangiero who also recorded five tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack. Corner back Damien McCallum intercepted Will Healy to end the scrimmage's seventh drive.
Healy led the Spiders' other scoring drive. The freshman drove the offense down to the five-yard-line, going 5-of-6 for 61 yards, before stalling. Carter Ball booted a 22-yard field goal.
In his third drive of the scrimmage, Brown needed just two plays to toss his first score. After scrambling out of the pocket and connecting with Monteverde for a 19-yard gain, Brown aired a pass down the right sideline that Wilson ran under and turned into a 51-yard touchdown.
In Brown's next time under center, he guided the offense on a five-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 36-yard touchdown to Shields. Lofting a bomb down the right side, Shields separated from the corner and made a leaping catch. Shields had two catches for 54 yards on the drive.
Following the conventional drives, each Spider signal-caller led a drive in the Red Zone. Tutt's attempt ended when safety Ryan Mace intercepted a tipped pass at the goalline. Brown threw a 40-yard touchdown to Shields who corralled a carom off a tip from corner Joe Mallory. Healy's drive also ended in the endzone when he threw a three-yard pass to Wilson. The Red Zone drive statistics do not figure into the scrimmage totals.
