
Women's Lacrosse Downs Explorers 14-10

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seven different Spiders scored this afternoon as the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team defeated La Salle 14-10 at First Market Stadium. With their fourth straight conference win, the Spiders improve to 6-7, 4-2 in the Atlantic 10 while the Explorers fall to 9-7, 2-3 in the league.
Richmond's three seniors, Jodi Brown (Salisbury, Md.), Kristy Fairhurst (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.), were recognized prior to the game, their final home contest at First Market Stadium.
Junior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) led the Spiders with four goals while Habicht and sophomore Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) also registered hat tricks with three goals each. In addition, Habicht recorded two assists.
Freshman Emily Bonczek led the visitors with four goals.
While gaining possession on the first three draws, the Spiders jumped to a 3-1 lead ten minutes into the contest. La Salle scored again four minutes later but Richmond's Erin Kennedy (Severna Park, Md.) converted a free position attempt and Habicht tallied her first goal of the afternoon to put the Spiders ahead 5-2 midway through the half. The teams exchanged goals during the remainder of the period and the Spiders held an 8-5 lead at the break.
Richmond opened the second half with two goals in the first two minutes. In the following three minutes of play, the Spiders tallied one more goal and the Explorers scored two to put the score at 11-7 After ten scoreless minutes, Richmond ended the drought off McGuire's fourth tally of the afternoon.
La Salle scored the final goal of the afternoon with just over three minutes left in the contest and the Spiders ended their regular season home schedule with the 14-10 win.
Junior Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.), last week's Atlantic 10 co-Player of the Week, made 12 saves in the net for the Spiders. La Salle's Brittany Friedrich stopped five Richmond shots.
Richmond was out-shot 26-22 but held a 16-10 advantage in draw controls.
The Spiders play their final regular season contest on Sunday, May 1 when they face Massachusetts in Amherst. Game time is set at 12:00 p.m.
