Richmond Student-Athletes Receive Weekly Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOMD, Va. - Three University of Richmond student-athletes earned weekly honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference for their play in last week's events as announced yesterday by the league. Freshman Brian Alas was named baseball's co-Rookie of the Week and classmate Chris Bagley was selected as the men's golf Rookie of the Week. Senior Lindsay Cox earned her second Performer of the Week honor for women's tennis.
Alas, who has been honored twice by the A-10 this season, began last week with his first win as a starter by going 5.0 innings against William & Mary. The righthander shutout the Tribe on two hits, while striking out one. Later in the week he made a relief appearance in A-10 action versus St. Bonaventure. He worked 2.2 innings, struck out two and shutout the Bonnies on just two hits. The Chaminade High School grad has not allowed an earned run in more than eight innings of work.
Bagley earned his first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor after posting his first career top-10 finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate last week. The Charlotte, N.C. native carded a 224 (75-72-77) at the two-day event to tie for 10th. After playing seven collegiate events, 20 rounds, Bagley carries a 76.4 scoring average, third best on the team. He has two sub-par rounds so far this season.
Cox won all six of her matches, three at top singles and three at top doubles, this past week and led the Spiders to a 2-1 mark. During wins against George Mason (3/29) and Georgetown (4/1) and a loss to Virginia Tech (4/2), Cox won all in singles matches in straight sets. The Finchampstead, England native has won eight straight singles matches and 10 consecutive doubles matches. She and partner Meghan Wolfgram are currently ranked No. 40 in the nation in doubles.
