Spiders Get Pounded At Towson, 30-3

TOWSON, Md. - The Spider baseball team dropped to 14-13 on the season after falling to Towson, 30-3, Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md. Richmond allowed the Tigers, who improved to 14-11 on the season, to score the most runs ever by a Richmond opponent.
The Tigers sent 16 batters to the plate in the first then 11 more in the second, to score a total of 22 runs on 10 hits to open the game. The Spiders' first two pitchers, freshman David Solan and junior Tim Rice allowed a total of 18 runs on seven hits and seven walks in a combine inning of work.
The Tigers later tacked on five more in the fourth and another in the sixth off reliever junior Wyatt Stewart. The Washington, D.C., native finished with 5.0 innings of work and allowed 10 runs on nine hits walked one and struck out three.
Richmond put its first run on the board in the sixth when freshman Alex Hale and junior Andrew Justice strung together back-to-back base hits. Hale doubled to right center then scored on a single to left from Justice.
The Spider posted two more in the eighth thanks to four consecutive base hits from the top of the order. Junior Ben Zeskind led-off in the inning with a single to right. He then moved to second on a single from freshman Hank Coogan and later scored on a single from Justice. Freshman Joe Mahoney followed those three with a run-scoring double to right center pushing Coogan across.
Sophomore Lee Rattigan closed it out for the Spiders and gave up two more to the Tigers, after junior John Richardson shutout Towson in the seventh on just two hits.
The Spiders return home Wednesday, April 5, to host Virginia Tech in a single game at Pitt Field.
