DAYTON, Ohio - The Spider baseball club left the game-tying run at third in the seventh inning Thursday falling 2-1 to Dayton. Richmond, which outhit the Flyers 8-5, fell to 20-31 overall and 12-10 in the conference with the loss. The Flyers ran their record to 32-21 and 14-8 in the A-10.
Due to rain in the Dayton area the two teams will now play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m. Originally the series was scheduled to wrap-up with a single-game Friday afternoon.
Richmond's freshman Brian Alas, who made the first conference start of his career, allowed two runs (one earned) on only five hits, no walks and one strike out. The Port Washington, N.Y., native went the distance for the first complete game of his career, but suffered the tough one-run loss.
Dayton got on the board in the bottom half of the second. The Flyers got a runner in scoring position when an errant pick-off attempt by freshman Alex Hale rolled into left field. One batter later, Alas gave up a run-scoring single for the unearned run.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the fourth after getting a runner to third with one out. The Spiders brought the infield in against Brandon Godlike, but a liner up the middle glanced off Alas' glove got past sophomore Anthony Sandstorm at second, allowing the run to score.
Richmond rallied in the sixth by loading the bases with one out. Freshman Joe Mahoney singled then stole second. Junior Andrew Justice followed with a single through the left side which moved Mahoney to third. After sophomore Matt McKenna drew the only walk of the contest, freshman Ryan Matzoth recorded a sac-fly to get the run home.
The Spiders had a shot to tie the game in the top half of the seventh when freshman Austin Reilly tripled down the right field line with one out. Freshman Joe White and Sandstorm both attempted to get the run in, but could only manage groundouts as Richmond fell, 2-1.
Richmond will end its regular season Friday, May 20, with a doubleheader against the Flyers at 1 p.m. The teams will begin the two-game set with a seven-inning contest at Time Warner Cable Stadium, then end it with a nine-inning game.
