UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond head women's basketball coach Michael Shafer announced today that Chris Carroll has been named an assistant coach. Carroll joins the Spiders after spending that last four years as the recruiting coordinator at Liberty University.
"Chris is a great addition to our staff here at Richmond," Shafer commented. "I have known him for many years and saw that his experience in recruiting and on-floor coaching was invaluable to Liberty's past success. I feel that his accomplishments with the Lady Flames will be beneficial in helping the Spiders become a nationally prominent program. We welcome Chris, his wife Leigh and their sons Will and Jack to the University of Richmond."
In each of his four years at Liberty, Carroll helped guide the Lady Flames to a Big South Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In his final season, Liberty became just the second 13th-seed to ever advance to the "Sweet Sixteen" with wins over fourth-seed Penn State and fifth-seed DePaul.
In addition to his role as recruiting coordinator, Carroll's responsibilities included on-court coaching during contests, scouting opponents and running practices.
Prior to his time in Lynchburg, Carroll spent three years at both Wyoming and Southern Mississippi, serving as the recruiting coordinator at both schools. In addition, he was named the associate head coach at Southern Mississippi. During his ten years as an assistant coach, Carroll has inked five Top 60 recruiting classes.
Before joining the Division I ranks, Carroll spent three years as the head coach at Truett-McConnell Junior College in Cleveland, Georgia. The three-time NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region XVII Coach of the Year posted an 86-14 mark with the Danes. In addition, Truett-McConnell finished among the NJCAA Top 10 in each of Carroll's years and he received three consecutive Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year honors.
Carroll played three years of college basketball, competing for Emmanuel JC for two years and at Tennessee Temple for one season. During his second season at Emmanuel, he received the Scholar-Athlete Award.
Carroll earned his Associate's Degree in Business from Emmanuel in 1988 and two years later, received a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Georgia.
In 1992, he completed post-graduate work at North Georgia College and State University, earning his Masters in Health and Physical Education.
The Pascagoula, Mississippi native and his wife Leigh are the parents of two sons, five-year old Will and seven-month old Jack.
