The Radford Midweek Contests
Fresh off a three-game conference series sweep of La Salle in Philadelphia, Pa., the Richmond baseball squad will host Radford in the final two games of the season at Pitt Field. Richmond, 18-25 overall this season, will take on the Highlanders (11-31) at 4 p.m., Monday afternoon then honor its seniors prior to a 3 p.m. contest Tuesday.
Radford is led by Mark Fleisher's .409 average in 38 games. The senior has a team-high six homers and leads the squad with 36 driven in. The Highlanders are hitting .290 as a team and their pitching staff has an ERA of 6.96. Radford has lost seven of its last eight after taking two in a conference series against High Point.
The Spiders are riding a three-game win streak after sweeping La Salle this past weekend. Richmond upped its season average three points on the weekend by outscoring the Explorers 22-12. The Spiders' pitchers allowed 19 hits in 23.0 innings and surrendered six extra-basehits. The team's hitters had an average of .323 on the weekend led by junior Andrew Justice's .545 average. The Henderson, N.C., native had six hits and scored four runs in the three games against La Salle.
Sophomore Rob Berzinskas was dazzling against the Explorers picking up his first win since March 26 Friday afternoon. The righthander carried a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning before surrendering a run on one more hit. Freshman Stephen Owens and junior Ja Jones threw complete games Saturday allowing the Spider bats to come alive.
Junior Ben Zeskind returned to his hitting ways after having his 14-game hit streak snapped last Tuesday. The switch-hitter has now hit in each of the last four and 18 of the last 19. He has failed to reach base just two times this season and has recorded at least one hit in all but five contests.
