Spider Baseball Falls To Radford At Pitt Field, 10-3

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider baseball squad rapped out 10 base hits off two Radford pitchers, but could not push enough runs across falling to the Highlanders, 10-3, Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Spiders to 18-26 overall, while Radford runs its record to 12-31 on the season.
Junior Tim Rice made his first start of the season and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while fanning three. After the Highlanders scored an unearned run in the first, Richmond rallied back to knot the score at one. Junior Ben Zeskind led the inning off with a single to right then stole his 12th base of the season. Sophomore Anthony Sandstrom moved him over on a ground out to second before freshman Joe Mahoney tallied the game-tying RBI with a single to left-center.
The Highlanders recorded two more in the second on one hit and one error, taking their final lead of the game. The Spiders posted another run in the fourth when freshman Ryan Metzroth led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a groundout then scored on an infield single from freshman Hank Coogan.
Radford came back to score three in the top half of the fifth and one more in the sixth, pushing its lead to 7-2. Richmond allowed another unearned run in the seventh and junior John Richardson gave up a two-run homer in the eighth to make the score 10-2.
The Spiders scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from freshman Joe White.
Richmond will wrap up its 2005 home schedule Tuesday, May 10, with a 2 p.m. game against the Highlanders. Freshman Tim Rice, Derek Duclos and John Cronin.
Game Notes
- Junior Ben Zeskind extended his hit streak to five games with a single in the first inning.
- Radford stole five bases on the Spiders, marking the most since James Madison stole six against Richmond April 20, 2005.
- Sophomore Anthony Sandstrom has recorded multiple hits in each of the last three for Richmond. He is a combined 7-for-11 since the second game at La Salle.
