UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond's junior pitcher Derek Duclos was tabbed by the New York Yankees, Wednesday, June 8 in the 28th round of Major League Baseball's First Year Player Draft.
"It is truly a thrill to be selected in the Major League Draft," Duclos said. "To be taken by such a prestigious franchise like the New York Yankees is quite an honor."
Duclos came back from off-season arm surgery to sport a 6.17 ERA in the 11.2 innings during 2005. The Exton, Pa., native was 1-2 in nine appearances, one as a starter.
Duclos, one of three draft-eligible juniors for the Spiders, was considered a bullpen specialist for the Richmond squad. The righthander had a 0.93 ERA in eight relief appearances, striking out eight in 9.2 innings.
In his final appearance of the season Duclos worked two innings of relief against George Washington in the A-10 Tournament. He did not allow a run on three hits and struck out one as the Spiders knocked off the second-seeded Colonials, 10-3.
Duclos, selected 859th overall, was the only Richmond player taken leaving the possibility for the Spiders to return all eight positional starters in 2006. Richmond may also return all but three members of its pitching staff next season.
