HARRISONBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond dropped its season-opening match 3-2 to in-state rival James Madison on Friday night in the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational.
Richmond (0-1-0) out-shot the host Dukes 19-14, but the Spiders never led after giving up a goal just over two minutes into the match. This was the second-straight season that the Spiders opened the season with a loss to James Madison. The two teams tied 1-1 in the 2003 season-opener.
Richmond freshman Jessie Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) scored her first collegiate goal and notched her first career assist on a goal by sophomore Ali LeVIne (Avon, N.J.). Freshman Julia Blizer (Annandale, Va.) also assisted on LeVine's goal, while freshman Robyn Brooks (Salt Lake City, Utah) assisted on Wolfe's goal.
James Madison (1-0-0) didn't take long to grab the lead when Karly Skladany headed a ball into the back of the net off a cross from Lindsay Bowers just 2:09 into the match.
Richmond tied the score 27:01 into the match when Blizer fed the ball to Wolfe, who set up LeVine's goal from 12 yards out. The Dukes regained the lead with 2:25 left in the first half when Teri Maykoski crossed to Jackie Graham, who scored from 14 yards out for a 2-1 lead at the break.
Richmond tied the game for the second time when Wolfe scored from six yards out on a corner kick by Brooks with 15:53 remaining in the game. Less than two minutes later James Madison was awarded a penalty kick for a Richmond hand ball and Natalie Ewell converted the game-winning goal with 14:17 on the clock.
Richmond senior goalkeeper Kelly Kolker (McLean, Va.) made six saves in net, while James Madison keeper Jessica Hussey turned back seven shots.
Richmond returns to action in the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational on Sunday against East Carolina at 11 a.m. The Pirates lost to Loyola (Md.) 4-2 in the opening game of the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational.
