The University of Richmond men's and women's cross country teams will split squads this weekend competing in the Maymont Cross Country Festival on Friday and the Great American Festival on Saturday.
On Friday, the women's team will run the 5K at 4:30 p.m. and the men's team will run the 8K, followed by the open 8K at 5:30 p.m. The Spiders will be joined by William & Mary, Fordham, Liberty, McDaniel, Radford, Bridgewater, Georgian Court and Ursinus. The Great American Cross Country Festival will take place Saturday with the men's 8K at 9:55 a.m. and the women's 5K at 10:55 a.m.
This is the third year of Maymont Cross Country Festival and the Spiders have won the first two men's and women's races. However this year, Richmond will have to do it without its top runners. The Spiders will be sending the top eight women's runners and top six men's runners to the Great American Festival in Cary, N.C.
Richmond junior Amanda Russell (North Bay, Ontario) is the two-time defending champion of the Maymont XC Festival and enior John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) is the defending champion of the men's race at Maymont, but both runners will be competing against some of the best teams in the nation at the Great American Festival.
Richmond has had two weeks off, but in their last race the Spider women's team finished fourth and the men's team took fifth at the Lou Onesty Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia. Ciccarelli was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week after finishing fifth and freshman Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors after finishing eighth. Russell led the Spider women with a sixth-place finish.
Results for both events will be available here at RichmondSpiders.com.
