Ciccarelli Finishes Fifth At Great American XC Festival

CARY, N.C. - University of Richmond senior John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) finished the 8K Nike Race of Champions in fifth place in a time of 24:19.00 at the Great American Cross Country Festival on Saturday.
Going up against some of the best collegiate runners in the nation, Ciccarelli turned in a tremendous performance that had him less than 20 seconds off the race winner, Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian.
Ciccarelli was just three seconds out of fourth place, seven seconds out of third and 10 seconds behind the runner-up, Clemson's Matt Clark.
The Richmond men's team finished 12th, while the Spider women's team took 10th.
Richmond junior Amanda Russell (North Bay, Ontario) led the Spider women's team with a 32nd place, running the 5K in a time of 18:17.70. Freshman Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) finished in 18:41.40 to place 47th.
Sophomore Kylee Schuler took 67th in a time of 19:07.10 and freshman Mary Bertram (Salisbury, N.C.) followed in 74th in a time of 19:20.00. Sophomore Shelby Faircloth (Centennial, Colo.) rounded out the scoring with an 87th-place finish in a time of 19:53.30.
Richmond's Jonathan Molz (East Northport, N.Y.) was the second Richmond men's runner to cross the finish line, taking 82nd in a time of 26:37.10. Sophomore Hunter Willis (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) followed in 87th in a time of 26:51.60, freshman Sean McKinney (Downington, Pa.) took 92nd (27:07.70) and freshman Mike Gaubinger (Northampton, Mass.) followed in 93rd (27:08.90).
The Spiders return to action this Saturday at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlem, Pa.
