Spider Swimming & Diving Drops 2006 Opener At Rutgers

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider Swimming and Diving team opened the 2006 portion of its season Wednesday evening, Jan. 11, with a 172-117 loss at Rutgers. Richmond came away from the triple-duel, which included Seton Hall and Rider, with a total of five wins including a 200-free relay time of 1:40.33. Team scores were only kept in the duel against Rutgers, although swims included individuals and relay teams from all four squads.
Junior Caitlin Geary got the Spiders off to a good start in the 1,000 free with season-best time of 10:18.16 to earn first place in the event. Geary went on to place third in the 500 free (5:06.89), and was part of the second-place team in the 200-free relay event.
Sophomore Jessica Witt began her evening with a season-best time in the 200 free (1:53.05) to earn third-place honors. She also logged a team-best time of 2:06.10 in the 200 fly to place second, swimming the event for the first time this season. Another first-time swim in the 200 back for Witt again resulted in a team-best time and first-place finish (2:03.98). Witt wrapped up the evening with a win in the 200 IM in 2:07.88.
Freshman Lauren Beaudreau garnered a top spot in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.80. Beaudreau then helped pace the 200-free relay team to the first-place finish in 1:40.33. She was joined by sophomore Anastasia Lau and juniors Alicia Crossman and Emily Bateman.
Richmond will now return home for its only two home events of the season. The Spiders will host William & Mary, Saturday, Jan. 28, and Navy, Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Robins Center Natatorium. Both duels are scheduled to have swimming events begin at 2 p.m. Admission to both events will be free.
