SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - The University of Richmond men's basketball team lost to Rhode Island 58-46 on Saturday night in the Ryan Center, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Spiders.
The Spiders were tied with the Rams 36-36 midway through the second half, but a 16-3 run by Rhode Island proved too much to overcome for Richmond. The Spiders dropped to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island won its fourth-straight to improve to 10-6, 4-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Jermaine Bucknor was Richmond's high-scorer with 13 points, while Kevin Steenberge added 11 for the Spiders.
Rhode Island's Dawan Robinson scored 26 points as the Rams won their fourth consecutive game. Robinson scored eight points during a 12-1 run late in the game that turned a 40-38 lead into a 52-39 lead. He scored six straight at one point and his basket with 3:02 left gave the Rams (10-6, 4-1 Atlantic 10) a 50-39 lead.
"He took advantage of his quickness and his ability to get to the basket," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "He's a little bit hard for us to defend."
Richmond (10-8, 3-2) was cold from the floor in the second half, making just six of 29 shots and going longer than seven minutes without a field goal at one point.
"It's tough to have trouble scoring for that long a period of time," Mooney said. "It's frustrating. I give Rhode Island credit, they had a good game plan. We were stuck on 38 points for so long, and while we held them, you can't just expect to keep holding them and holding them. You have score some points."
Rhode Island outscored Richmond 21-12 from the foul line. Robinson hit a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Rhode Island a 28-25 lead at the break. There were three ties and four lead changes in the first half.
The Spiders opened up a four-point lead with 16:28 left on a three-point play by Drew Crank with 11:46 to play.
Richmond has a week off before hosting Charlotte on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
