UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond freshman guard Sarah Williams (Wilmington, Del.) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week following a standout performance against both Fordham on Jan. 22 and Charlotte on Jan. 27, in which she averaged 10 points and 4.5 rebounds and shot 4-6 from the three-point line. Williams, who jumped into the Spiders' starting line-up for the past two games, has reached double-figures in two of the last three games and averages 4.2 points per game. Just one point shy of reaching double-digits against Fordham, the 6-0 guard made three three-pointers, tying her career-high treys against Fordham and sunk her only three-point attempt at Charlotte, where she knocked in 11 points.
Williams joined the Spiders from Ursuline Academy where she earned four varsity letters, averaging 17.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She served as a team captain for two years, leading her squad to two state championships and scoring over 1,000 career points. The two-time Street & Smith All-American honorable mention was named to the All-State and All-Region First Teams as a senior. A true athlete, Williams also played two years of soccer and four years of volleyball in which she was twice selected to the All-State First Team and named the Gatorade Player of the Year after leading her team to three consecutive state titles.
"I am proud of Sarah," stated Richmond head coach Michael Shafer. "She had a good week for us. We have seen glimpses of this type of play. She was able to put together back-to-back performances this week. I hope to see her have more weeks like this as we head down the final stretch."
See Williams and the Spiders in action on Sunday when they will host the George Washington Colonials at 2:00 p.m. in the Robins Center.
