UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 18th-ranked Richmond Spiders field hockey team begins a four-game roadtrip this weekend when it heads north to face Rhode Island and UMass, beginning Friday, Oct. 13. Richmond will take on the Rams at 3:30 p.m. in Kingston, R.I., then travel to UMass to face the Minutewomen, Sunday, Oct. 15 at noon.
The Spiders have not lost an Atlantic 10 regular-season contest since 2001, and will be looking to extend a 35-game win streak against all A-10 opponents. Richmond is also riding a four-game win streak which dates back to Sept. 30 versus Radford. In that span the Spiders have scored 32 goals, while sophomore Becca Weaver and freshman Jacki Raithel have combined to blank the opposition in scoring.
Junior Shannon Taylor, the reigning All-Atlantic 10 Weekly Performer the last three weeks, ranks third in the country in scoring with a point-per-game average of 3.54. She also ranks third in the country in goals per game with an average of 1.54.
Freshman Lindsey Conrad, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the last two weeks, ranks second in the conference behind Taylor in both points (25) and goals (10). The Wilkes Barre, Pa., native logged a total of 13 points last weekend as the Spiders opened Atlantic 10 play. Conrad scored three goals and registered two assists in the 11-0 win over West Chester, then scored two goals and garnered an assist in the 6-0 victory over La Salle.
Richmond has never lost to the Rams in the all-time series, outscoring Rhode Island 27-3. The Spiders have also outscored the Rams, 7-0 in games played in Kingston, R.I.
Richmond is 7-3 all-time against the Minutewomen, including two wins over UMass last season. The Spiders won the regular season contest in Richmond, 4-1, then prevailed 7-1 over the Minutewomen in last season's A-10 Championship final. Richmond's last regular season win in Amherst, Mass., came Oct. 24, 2004, when the Spiders shutout UMass, 7-0.
