KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Shannon Taylor helped No. 18 Richmond extend numerous streaks this season with a 1-0 win over Rhode Island Friday in Kingston, R.I. The Midlothian, Va., native notched the only goal of the game in the 12th minute to push the Spiders to 10-4 on the year and 3-0 in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island fell to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in the league with the loss.
Not only did the Spiders win the game, but they extended their unbeaten streak in Atlantic 10 games to 36-straight. Richmond also has now won each of it last five games dating back to Sept. 30. The Spider defense as well as goalkeepers sophomore Becca Weaver and freshman Jacki Raithel have contributed five-straight shutouts. Weaver got her first shutout of the season Friday against Rhode Island by turning away four Ram shots. The two Spider keepers have combined for six shutouts on the season, including one for each and four combined team shutouts.
Taylor's goal, her 21st of the season, came when she was able to work the ball into the middle of the field for a shot at the top of the circle. The junior midfielder got it past Rhody's M.J. Britt to the right side, as Britt finished the contest with 10 saves.
Richmond ended the game out-shooting the Rams, 13-4, but trailed in penalty-corner attempts, 5-3.
The Spiders return to action Sunday when they travel to Amherst, Mass., to face the UMass Minutewomen at noon.
