UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Shannon Taylor and freshman Lindsey Conrad swept weekly Atlantic 10 Field Hockey awards, conference officials announced Monday. Taylor earned her second-straight and third overall Player of the Week nod, while Conrad picked up her first Rookie of the Week honor.
Taylor, a native of Midlothian, Va., totalled 17 points on the week after scoring eight goals and passing out one assist in the Spiders' three games last week. The midfielder pitched in one goal for the Spiders in their 5-3 loss to No. 8 Virginia Wednesday. She then notched a pure hat trick along with an assist in Richmond's 6-0 win over Radford Saturday. A day later, Taylor tied the Richmond record for single-game goals with four in the 9-0 win over Davidson. Taylor now has 16 goals on the season, which leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks third in the country. Her 36 points is also a league-best and places her tied for fourth in the nation with an average of 3.27 per game.
Conrad, who recorded four goals in the three-game week for the Spiders, ranks second on the team with a total of 12 points this season. The Wilkes-Barre, Pa., native registered the first multi-goal game of her career in the loss to the eighth-ranked Cavaliers Wednesday, then followed it up with a goal apiece in the wins over the weekend. Her goal in the 9-0 win over Davidson proved to be the game-winner. Currently, the forward is tied for sixth place in the Atlantic 10 among goals scorers with five, and is seventh on the league list for points with 12 on the year.
The Spiders open defense of their four-straight Atlantic 10 titles this weekend when they host West Chester and La Salle at Crenshaw Field this weekend. Friday's contest against the Golden Rams is slated for 3:30 p.m., Oct. 6, while Sunday's game against the Explorers will get underway at noon, Oct. 8.
