WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Richmond Spiders opened the 2006-07 slate with a split at UNC-Wilmington including a 153-147 victory over the Seahawks, and a 165-135 loss to the Duke Blue Devils. Richmond will return to the pool next weekend when it hosts NC State in its only home meet of the season. Action in the Robins Center Natatorium will get underway Friday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m.
"It was a close meet, but we weren't that sharp," Richmond head coach Matt Barany said. "There were highlights in Caitlin's (Geary) and Katie's (Sieben) swims, and a lot of room for improvement for all of us."
Junior Jessica Witt, an All-America honoree in the 400 IM as a sophomore last year, earned a pair of first-placed finishes, taking the 1,000 free (10:16.19) and the 200 back (2:06.46). Senior Caitlin Geary added a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:04.56) while adding second-place finishes in the 1,000 (10:17.66) and 200 (1:56.47) free. Sophomore Laura Beaudreau rounded out the Spiders' effort winning the 200 IM (2:06.94) and recording a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 (1:06.77) and 200 (2:21.53) breast.
"We've been training well, but we didn't respond well to the competition today," Barany added. "I don't think today's meet is an indication of what we are capable of doing."
The Spiders will return to the Robins Center Natatorium next weekend to host their only home event of the season. Action against the NC State Wolfpack will get underway at 5 p.m. Prior to the meet, Richmond will honor its senior class.
