UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 17th-ranked Richmond Spider field hockey squad will wrap up its regular season Sunday, Oct. 29, when it hosts Saint Louis at noon. Prior to the contest, Richmond will honor its two senior captains Jodi Murphy and Heather Wrublesky who will be playing their final regular-season game at home.
The Spiders, winners of their previous eight games, return to Crenshaw Field after playing the past four Atlantic 10 games on the road. This season the Spiders are 8-1 at Crenshaw Field, and will look to remain at home in the coming weeks as the Atlantic 10 Championships will be played in Richmond, Nov. 3-4.
Junior Shannon Taylor leads the squad with 26 goals in 17 games, which ranks fourth nationally in goals-per-game. Her 3.47 point-per-game average ranks tied for third nationally, and leads the Atlantic 10 Conference by nearly two points per game. Taylor, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, recorded the second four-goal game of her career last Sunday when she notched four (including three-straight) in a 6-1 win at St. Joseph's.
Freshman Lindsey Conrad, who has won or shared Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the last four weeks, ranks second in the conference behind Taylor in points with 33. The Wilkes Barre, Pa., native is just one goal behind Taylor in Atlantic 10 games, and ranks tied for 26th in the country with a 1.94 points-per-game average.
The Spiders have met Saint Louis three times dating back to 1993, and have allowed just two goals in three-straight Richmond wins.
Following this weekend's game the Spiders will remain at home to take part in the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championships at Crenshaw Field. The top four squads in the A-10 will meet in the semifinals, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The winners will then advance to the championship final Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
