UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team played the Dayton Flyers to a 5-1 loss in a wet match-up on Friday night at First Market Stadium. Sophomore Ashleigh Blumer netted the Spiders' lone goal and her third of the season in their loss on Friday night.
Richmond put the first score on the board just over 11 minutes into the first half. After blasting a shot that was blocked by a Dayton defender, Blumer followed her own shot's deflection, ripping another one that soared to the far right corner of the net, giving the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Dayton's Mandi Back responded with the equalizer and the first of three-straight goals on the night as she beat a Richmond defender down the middle and knocked the ball to the right of the sophomore keeper Kate Hudson.
Exactly 10 minutes later, at the 20:56 mark, Back slid the ball past Hudson from the left side to give her team a two goal lead.
Back then collected the ball in front of the goal, just three and a half minutes before halftime, and beat a Richmond defender for a shot that earned her a hat trick on the evening and a 3-0 Flyer advantage going into halftime.
Dayton's Dara Elk found the back of the net for the Flyers' fourth goal just over 17 minutes into the second half. After following up a saved shot by teammate Annette Bonasso, Elk placed the ball just out of Hudson's reach.
The final goal of the contest came with just under three minutes remaining (87:01), as Kristen Persichini followed her own shot that was blocked and put in her second shot to secure a 5-1 advantage.
Dayton (8-5-3 overall, 6-2 in the A-10) out shot the Spiders 18-8 on the game.
Richmond's Hudson registered seven saves in the net, while Niki Reed notched three saves in goal for the Flyers.
The Spiders (2-13-2 overall, 2-6-0 in the A-10) will conclude their season on Sunday as they host the Xavier Musketeers at 1:00 at First Market Stadium. Live coverage for Sunday's contests will be available at RichmondSpiders.com.
