UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Spider swimming and diving squad will end the 2006 portion of its schedule this weekend with a trip to the Terrapin Invitational, Nov. 16-18, in College Park, Md. The Spiders, 2-3 in duel meet competition this season, finished fourth at the Terp Invite last year behind NC State, a squad Richmond has already topped this season.
Fourteen teams will begin competition at the Terrapin Invite Thursday with prelims at 10 a.m. Finals for each of the three days of competition will get underway at 6 p.m. NCAA 16-place scoring will be kept, while relay scoring is not limited. Thursday will feature both the 200 free and 400 medley relays, as all relays will be swam during the evening sessions as timed finals. The 200 medley and 800 free relays will take place in Friday's evening session. The 1,650 free event will take place throughout the day Saturday, while the 400 free relay is slated for Saturday's evening session. The top-eight seeded 1,650 swimmers will compete during the evening session Saturday with timed finals, while all other seeded swimmers in the 1,650 free will swim timed finals earlier in the day.
"This meet has been good to us in the past," head coach Matt Barany said. "We like going to Maryland because we swim a championship style meet at a great facility against superb competition. We're eager to introduce our freshmen to this scene. It's the same format as our A-10 Championship, so they will get a better understanding of that meet format."
Junior Jessica Witt and sophomore Lauren Beaudreau turned in superb performances in the Spiders' previous meet at nationally-ranked North Carolina. Witt, a native of Fullerton, Calif., turned in a 10:10.45 in the 1,000 free against the Tar Heels and Minnesota Gophers in Chapel Hill two weeks ago. She also logged a 4:55.96 in the 500 free and a 4:24.71 in the 400 IM.
"The women have looked sharp this week and have been able to access their speed better than we've expected," Barany added. "We hope all the ladies will be able to grow forward from every race as it is a long weekend."
Beaudreau scored Richmond's first NCAA b-cut time this season with a 4:20.33 in the 400 IM at North Carolina. The Lafayette, Calif., native also won the 200 IM and 200 breast events against the Tar Heels and Gophers. Her mark of 2:04.18 in the 200 IM was .05 seconds off an NCAA b-cut time, while her 200 breast time of 2:18.15 was two seconds faster than the second-place time in the event.
Richmond will get back to action in the 2007 portion of its season, Jan. 12-13, as it travels back to College Park, Md., for a four-team duel meet. The Spiders will face the Terrapins, Pittsburgh and Villanova in Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in the two-day event.
