COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Lauren Beaudreau won the 200 breast with another NCAA b-cut time, and the Spiders logged four top finishes in the 200 back Saturday in day three of the Terrapin Invite in College Park, Md. Richmond ended the meet with a sixth-place finish and a total of 272 points.
West Virginia took home team honors with a grand total of 641.5 points, while Kansas finished second with 609 points. Host Maryland placed third with a score of 370.5. Villanova logged a fourth-place mark with 349 points, while UConn finished just in front of the Spiders with a total of 287 points.
"We use this meet to see where we are at this point in the season," head coach Matt Barany said. "It was important to see how the freshmen would respond to a meet at this point in the season, especially a meet as fast as this one was."
Junior Jessica Witt and senior Caitlin Geary each took part in the evening final heat of the 1,650 free. Witt placed seventh with a mark of 16:56.44, while Geary came in 10th with a time of 17:00.17.
Four Spiders all logged top times evening finals of the 200 back. Witt placed seventh in the finals, but logged a morning prelim time of 2:03.44. Sophomore Cara Smaniotto finished eighth after turning in a prelim mark of 2:04.52, ninth-best ever at Richmond. Freshman Beth Ann Platt placed her name eighth on the all-time 200 back list at Richmond with a 2:04.49 in the finals for 10th place. Freshman Alex Helland also turned in a season-best with a mark of 2:05.33 in the event.
"I think our freshmen responded well in the meet," Barany added. "It is good for them to learn lessons like they learned this weekend, rather then having them experience those things in the last weekend of the season."
Beaudreau then logged another NCAA b-cut time with a win in the 200 breast. The Lafayette, Calif., native swam a 2:16.03 in the event, winning by more than a second.
Richmond will now train prior to semester break, then return to action in 2007 with a four-team duel, Jan. 12-13. The Spiders will travel back to College Park, Md., to compete against Maryland, Pittsburgh and Villanova in the two-day event.
