UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Five Spiders scored in double figures and the team shot a staggering 72-percent from the floor to propel Richmond to an 83-72 against the Longwood Lancers on Monday night in the Robins Center.
Freshman center Dan Geriot, after combining for 32 points in the season's first two games, racked up 19 against Longwood on 7-for-9 shooting to help the Spiders improve to 3-0 on the season, the best start since 2003-04.
Richmond jumped off to a red-hot start, pushing out in front of the Lancers 12-2 with just more than four minutes played.
"I'm pleased with the talent," said Spider head coach Chris Mooney. "I'm pleased with who we have in our program and I think there's plenty to build on."
Longwood, had led for the first 28 minutes of its game with George Washington on Friday, but fell behind from the start and struggled to significantly chip into the Spider lead in the first half. Richmond widened the gap with steady shooting through the middle of the period as the Spiders put up 18 points in a six-minute span, which included 12 points from freshman guard David Gonzalvez. Three-straight treys from red-shirt freshman Ryan Butler followed, establishing Richmond's biggest lead of the half, 44-27.
"Sometimes we have good steaks where everybody looks good, and you can see the potential in everybody," Gonzalvez said.
The first half ended with the Spiders up by 12 at 44-31. Butler scored 14 of his 16 points in the opening period. He finished the game 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line to go along with five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
In the second half, a 3-pointer from freshman forward David Brewster at the 17:41 mark gave Richmond its largest lead of the game, 54-34. Although the Lancers managed to creep back into the contest and pull within five points, sophomore Jarhon Giddings answered with a 3-pointer and the Spiders got the lead back up to double figures.
The Longwood attack threatened with 3:13 remaining in the game, down 76-70, but Richmond knocked down seven consecutive free throws to stay undefeated in the young season.
The Spiders reeled off an impressive 11-for-16 clip from three-point range in the game (68.8 percent), including Brewster's four treys. Brewster, of Silver Spring, Md., finished with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Lancer senior guard Maurice Sumter paced Longwood in points with 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting.
The Spiders will play their first road game on Saturday against Old Dominion at noon in Norfolk, Va. The Monarchs are 4-1, coming off an upset victory at No. 8 Georgetown on Sunday.
