UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Redshirt sophomore Johanna McKnight is bringing the Richmond women's basketball team home with her to Louisiana to compete in the Four Points By Sheraton UNO Lady Privateer Invitational. The Spiders will begin tournament action with Appalachian State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. (EST.) at the Human Performance Center in New Orleans, La.
Richmond (2-5) just dropped 87-66 at Notre Dame in its third-straight road game on Tues. night at the Joyce Center in front of 5,629 fans. Despite just a three-point deficit at halftime, the Spiders were unable to overcome Notre Dame's (4-2) second half momentum, dropping to the Fighting Irish behind McKnight's season-high 14 points. Christina Campion delivered her third consecutive double-figure game with 13 points on the night and Sarah Williams put in 10 points, notching her second straight double-digit performance and third of the season.
Campion (12.1 ppg) leads the team in scoring as the lone Spider averaging double-digits, while Nikita Thomas (6.4 rpg) leads the team on the boards. Last season, the Spiders posted a 13-17 overall mark, finishing tied for 8th in the A-10 with a 7-9 record.
Appalachian just snapped its two game skid with an 84-61 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C where four Mountaineers reached double-digits. Jaime Bennett paced all scorers with 18 points, while teammates Maria Grimes and Whitney Ketner added 17 points apiece and Whitney Tossie put in 12 points on the night. The Mountaineers improved to 3-3 with the win.
Four Mountaineers average double-digits, led by Tossie (17.3 ppg), Grimes (13.7 ppg), Bennett (12.3 ppg) and GiGi Thomas (11.5 ppg). Appalachian returns just one starter from last year's squad that posted a 15-13 overall mark, finishing 4th in the Southern Conference with an 11-7 record.
The Mountaineers own a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series after defeating the Spiders in their first two meetings in 1984 and 1985. The Spiders then defeated the Mountaineers by 26 points (94-68) in their last meeting in Dec. 1997 at the Tulane Doubletree Classic in New Orleans, La.
Following Friday's contest with the Mountaineers, the Spiders will conclude tournament action and their five-game road stand with either Southeastern Louisiana or the University of New Orleans.
