UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Shannon Taylor's two goals, along with a pair from junior Tara Kelly, helped lift the 17th-ranked Richmond field hockey squad to a 4-2 win over Lock Haven Tuesday, Nov. 7, in an NCAA Play-In game at Crenshaw Field. With the win, the Spiders (17-4) earn their fifth-straigh berth in the NCAA Tournament and will await their pairing released during a CSTV broadcast Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Kelly helped get the Spiders on the board in seventh minute of play, redirecting a shot fired by Taylor to mark her second goal of the season. Taylor took possession outside the circle and fired a low ball inside a crowd where Kelly was waiting on the left post.
Kelly again took advantage of an injected ball in the 16th minute, redirecting a shot fired by junior Erin Arthur. Kelly used a low ball she received on one of the posts for her second of the day and third of the season.
Lock Haven pulled within one in the 21st minute when it used a breakaway to beat the Richmond defense. Samantha Stoyer used a great pass from Blair Wynne as the Spiders' keeper, sophomore Becca Weaver, came out on the attack. With Weaver out in front, Stoyer was able to tap it home.
Taylor then got in on the act at the 30:30 mark when she connected following a rebounded shots. The goal, which was the result of an initial Spider deflection, helped Taylor tie the Spider single-season goal mark of 29 set by Holly Cram in 2004.
Richmond held a 12-3 shot advantage going into halftime and had a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners at the midway point.
Taylor later set both the Spider single-season goal and points record with a tally in the 40th minute to put Richmond up 4-1. The goal, her 30th of the season, came off another deflection in front of the net. It also gave her 69 points on the season, topping Holly Cram mark of 67 set in 2004.
The Lady Eagles added a late goal off rebound in the 61st minute. Mandy Daschbach used a deflection off Weaver to net the goal and pull Lock Haven within two.
The Lady Eagles recorded one of their three penalty corners with 26 seconds left in regulation, but failed to get off a shot as time expired.
Defensively, Weaver finished with one save and Lock Haven's Becca Yerkes made six stops in cage. The Lady Eagles' Renee Kemmerer and Jill Wessner each had defensive saves along with one for Taylor and the Spiders.
Richmond will now wait as pairings for the NCAA Championships will be released during a live broadcast on CSTV at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday evening. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website -- RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider field hockey.
