UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team put up a season high in points, but it was not enough against the nation's leading-scoring team as the Spiders came up short 93-84 to VMI on Wednesday in the Robins Center.
The game was tied 64-64 with 9:45 to play, but a 14-3 run gave VMI a 78-67 lead and they would hold on for the victory.
"I think a lot of credit goes to VMI, their style of play gets so much attention and it is unique," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "They have some good players and they played much better than us tonight."
Richmond freshman Kevin Hovde scored a career-high 24 points, grabbed a career-high seven rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists. He made all three of his 3-point attempts.
Freshman David Gonzalvez scored in double-figures for the second-straight game with 15 points and dished out a career-high six assists. Freshman Dan Geriot scored 10 points and grabbed a career-highs six rebounds.
Richmond (4-5) led 42-40 at halftime, helped by a 14-0 run late in the first half. Freshman Brian Morris scored six of his nine points in that stretch.
While Richmond had a season-high 23 assists, VMI's hectic pace forced 26 Spider turnovers and the Keydets converted them into 33 points. VMI made their first 17 free throws and finished 23-of-26 for the game.
Reggie Williams led VMI with 28 points, while Travis Holmes had 19, Chavis Holmes had 18 and Matt Murrer had 16.
The Spiders do not have long to think about this loss as they return to action on Friday at Wake Forest for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
