UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Following a one-week holiday break from competition, the Richmond women's basketball team will return to action to host Marshall on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the Robins Center in the first-ever meeting between the schools. The men's team will follow with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off with Tulane.
Richmond (4-8) enters the game after a 72-41 loss to No. 11 Georgia in the Robins Center, where Katie Holzer and Christina Campion led the Spiders' efforts with 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Campion (11.0 ppg) leads the team in scoring as the lone Spider averaging double-digits, while Sarah Williams (8.3 ppg) and Holzer (7.0 ppg) round out the Spiders' balanced attack. Nikita Thomas (6.3 rpg) leads the team on the boards after pulling double-digit rebounds in four different games.
Marshall is also coming off a loss as it fell 80-70 at Niagra last Thursday night when Alyssa Hammond paced the team with 23 points, while teammate Modupe Ishola followed with a double-double, chipping in 21 points and 13 rebounds. Ishola leads the team, averaging a double-double (15.9 ppg, 10.3 rpg), while Hammond (10.2 ppg) rounds out the Thundering Herd in double-figures. The Thundering Herd returns two starters from last year's squad that posted Marshall's third-straight winning season with a 15-14 overall mark, finishing fifth in Conference USA with a 9-7 record in its first season of competition with the league.
Both the Spiders and the Thundering Herd enter the contest off a loss and have dropped three of their last four contests. While the Spiders are 1-4 at home, earning their only home victory over city-rival VCU, Marshall is 1-2 on the road. Both teams will be looking to get back on the winning track and avoid a two-game losing streak.
Following Thursday's contest with the Thundering Herd, the Spiders will turn around and head down to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face ACC foe Wake Forest for a Saturday afternoon match-up. Tip-off with the Demon Deacons is set for 3:00 p.m. Live coverage, including live stats, audio broadcast and video streaming will be available for both the men's and women's game at RichmondSpiders.com.
