Charlotte was the first of three teams that Richmond will face twice this season. The Spiders split the season series with both teams winning at home. Richmond will also have rematches with George Washington on Saturday and St. Bonaventure on March 4, both in the Robins Center.
The Spiders dropped to 1-8 on the road this season and 2-9 outside of the Robins Center. After returning home to host No. 7 ranked George Washington on Saturday, the Spiders hit the road for two more games at Temple (Feb. 22) and at Saint Joseph's (Feb. 25) next week.
Charlotte has won four-straight conference games since its Jan. 28 to Richmond, while the Spiders have lost five-straight since the victory over the 49ers.
The Spiders allowed over 60 points for the fifth-straight game, after allowing just two of the first 19 opponents to score over 60 points. The Spiders gave up an average of 53 points per game over the first 19 games and were 11-8. In the last five games Richmond is allowing 68.2 points per game.
In a possible sign of showing the effects of having just seven scholarship players and using an eight-man rotation, Richmond has let a single-digit lead with 18 minutes to play turn into a double-digit lead with nine minutes to play in the last three games.
This was the third game this season that Richmond did not have a player reach double figures in scoring.
Senior Kevin Steenberge, who moved into second on Richmond's all-time career list on Sunday at St. Bonaventure, had four blocks against Charlotte to pull into fourth on the school's single-season list. Steenberge has 58 blocks this season and 141 for his career. He needs seven blocks to tie for the third-best single-season performance in school history and would need 42 blocks to tie for first on the school's all-time career list.
Steenberge fairs well against members of the 2005 Conference USA All-Conference Team. Steenberge blocked Louisville guard Taqaun Dean four times back on Dec. 5 and had three blocks on Charlotte star forward Curtis Withers on Wednesday night.
In one of the most impressive plays of the season, Steenberge skied to block a shot nearing the peak of its path, came up with the rebound and started dribbling up the court, threw a bounce pass to fellow senior Jermaine Bucknor on a 2-on-1 fast-break and Bucknor lofted it back to Steenberge for a thunderous two-handed alley-oop dunk that drew a reaction from the Charlotte crowd.
Senior Jermaine Bucknor, Richmond's leading scorer, was held scoreless in 35 minutes of action Wednesday. Bucknor had scored 23 points and made five 3-pointers in the win over Charlotte on Jan. 28 in the Robins Center. It was the first time Bucknor was held scoreless in almost a year. He was held without a point on Feb. 16, 2005 in a loss at Saint Joseph's. This was just the seventh time in his last 84 games that he was held scoreless dating back through his sophomore year.
Sophomore Monty Sanders tied a career-high with nine points Wednesday night. He made two 3-pointers in the game, the third time he did so this season.
