UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After earning an exciting 8-7 victory over No. 7 Virginia, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team will now face its third nationally-ranked opponent of the season as it faces No. 6 Maryland. The Spiders will travel to College Park, Md. on Saturday to play the Terrapins at 2:00 pm. at Ludwig Field.
The Spiders (1-1) are led by Mandy and Ashley Friend, who have both scored five goals in the first two games, as well as Caroline McGuire, who has already added four goals for the Spiders. Richmond is coming off a loss to No. 2 Duke, as well as a thrilling win over the 2005 national runner-up Virginia, in which both A. Friend and McGuire recorded hat tricks and M. Friend added two goals to give the Spiders their first victory over the Cavaliers in over 20 years.
Led by Delia Cox, who is averaging 3 goals per game, and Kelly Kasper, who is averaging 1.75 goals, the Terrapins are currently 2-2 after losses to Northwestern and Duke, the top two teams in the nation, and wins over Ohio and George Mason. Maryland is returning 19 players from last year's squad that posted a 12-7 record and finished third in the ACC with a 2-2 conference record, advancing to the NCAA first round.
Following Saturday's contest, the Spiders will return home to host William and Mary on Wed., March 8, at p.m. and Monmouth on Fri., March 10 at 3:00 p.m.
