UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 12th-ranked Richmond women's lacrosse team is heading up north again for Atlantic 10 competition to face La Salle at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sunday at noon.
The Spiders, now 12-3 overall and leading the Atlantic 10 with a 4-1 conference mark, are currently tied with the program's most wins in a season and will look to break the school record and notch their fifth-straight win over the Explorers.
As a team and individually, the Spiders are off to their best start ever and have made distinct marks on the conference and on the country, from taking down No. 7 Virginia to winning eleven-straight contests to having individual Spiders receive both A-10 and national recognition.
Since opening the season, the Spiders have captured a combined total of eight A-10 Rookie and Player of the Week honors, as well as one Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week and one Honorable Mention honor, and one womenslacrosse.com honor roll.
In addition to ranking 12th in the nation, the Spiders currently place eighth in the nation for win percentage (.800), 13th for scoring offense (13.00 gpg), 14th for scoring margin (4.33), and 16th for scoring defense (8.67). Additionally, Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg ranks fourth for save percentage (.550) and 15th for goals against average (8.67).
Senior Caroline McGuire currently leads all Spiders in scoring with 42 goals, including nine hat tricks, followed by Richmond's sister act, comprised of freshman Mandy Friend with 41 goals and nine hat tricks and junior Ashley Friend with 36 goals and six hat tricks.
The Explorers are currently 5-10 overall and tied for seventh place in the A-10 with a 1-4 mark in league play after a 14-7 loss to the Temple Owls on Wed. Led by Emily Bonczek with 39 goals, La Salle is returning 15 players from last year's squad that recorded a 9-8 overall record and finished fifth in the A-10 with a 2-5 mark.
Following Sunday's contest, the Spiders will conclude their regular season with the Saint Joseph's Hawks on April 28th at First Market Stadium.
