UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 11th-ranked Richmond women's lacrosse team returns to First Market Stadium on Friday at 3:00 p.m. for its final contest of the regular season. Prior to Friday's game against the Saint Joseph's Hawks, four Spider seniors, Sara Allen, Allison Nuzzi, Caroline McGuire, and Jackie Swansburg will be recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the Richmond lacrosse program over the last four years.
The Spiders, now 13-3 overall and leading the A-10 with a 5-1 league mark, are off to their best start ever and have made distinct marks on the conference and on the country, from taking down No. 7 Virginia to winning 11-straight contests to having individual Spiders receive both A-10 and national recognition.
With its recent triumph over La Salle, the 2006 squad made its mark in the program's record book for the most wins in a season, breaking the previous record (12 wins) set by the 2002 squad.
Also, since opening the season, the Spiders have captured a combined total of nine A-10 Rookie and Player of the Week honors, as well as one Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week and one Honorable Mention honor, and one womenslacrosse.com honor roll.
In addition to ranking 11th in the nation, the Spiders also place seventh in the nation for win percentage (.813), 11th for scoring margin (4.44), 12th for scoring defense (8.38), and 13th for scoring offense (12.81). Additionally, Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg ranks third for save percentage (.556) and 10th for GAA (8.38).
Caroline McGuire with 42 goals and nine hat tricks and Ashley Friend with 39 goals and seven hat tricks.
The Hawks are 4-9 overall and 1-4 in A-10 and are coming off a 24-2 loss at No. 1 Duke. Led by Kerry O'Connell with 34 goals, Saint Joseph's is returning 19 players from last year's squad that recorded a 5-10 record and finished 8th in the A-10 with a 1-6 mark.
The Spiders will look to notch their sixth-straight win over the Hawks on Friday.
Following Friday's contest, the Spiders will travel to Washington, D.C. for the A-10 Championships on May 5 and 7. Live coverage for Friday's contest will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
