McGuire Nets Six Goals To Lead 11th-Ranked Spider Lacrosse To A 20-2 Senior Day Triumph Over Saint Joseph's

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - It was a true senior day for Caroline McGuire as she netted a career-high six goals to lead her 11th-ranked women's lacrosse team to a 20-2 victory over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at First Market Stadium in its final regular season contest. With Friday's win, the Spiders notched their sixth-straight win over the Hawks and improved to 14-3 overall and concluded conference play with a 6-1 mark.
Junior Ashley Friend also added five goals in the triumph, while sister Mandy Friend scored three goals to record her eleventh hat trick of the season. Freshman Katy Smullen added two goals and junior Morghan Vahue and sophomores Jenna Hubbard, Erin Kennedy, and Claire Cunniff scored one apiece as the Spiders took an 18-goal win over the Hawks (4-10, 1-5 in the A-10).
Back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of play is how McGuire started off her senior day, scoring her first of six goals on the way to her tenth hat trick of the year. Ashley Friend followed with a free position shot before Vahue and Ashley Friend then put in a pair of goals to give the Spiders a 7-0 lead; the first off an assist from sister Mandy, the second off an assist from McGuire.
Cunniff dropped in her lone goal of the game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half before McGuire put in another pair of goals, one assisted and one off an assist from Ashley Friend. Mandy Friend was then able to put in one more goal to give the Spiders an 11-0 advantage before the intermission.
Senior Ashley Friend contributed a pair of goals to the six-goal run effort.
At the 7:56 mark, Westlake put in the Hawks' second and final goal of the afternoon off a free position shot. Richmond's Smullen and Kennedy each netted one more goal in the final 5:15 of play to secure an 18-goal triumph over the Hawks.
The Spiders will now prepare for the A-10 Championships in Washington, D.C. on May 5 and 7.
