No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Hosts Massachusetts On Sunday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After a dominating 13-2 victory over the Temple Owls on Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 competition, the ninth-ranked University of Richmond women's lacrosse team will host the Massachusetts Minutewomen on Sunday at noon at First Market Stadium. The Spiders, now 10-2 overall and 2-0 in A-10 play, will be going for their tenth consecutive win of the season.
After rounding out non-conference action 8-2, the Spiders opened A-10 play with a 16-14 win over George Washington and a 13-2 triumph over Temple to improve them to a 10-2 overall mark and a 2-0 A-10 record, their best start ever. Freshman Mandy Friend currently leads all Spiders with 35 goals, including eight hat tricks, followed by senior Caroline McGuire with 33 goals and seven hat tricks.
The Spiders currently rank ninth in the nation for scoring offense (13.27 gpg), 17th for scoring margin (4.09), eighth for win percentage (.818), and 18th for caused turnovers (10.45). Additionally, M. Friend ranks 16th in the nation for scoring (3.09 gpg) and Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg ranks sixth for save percentage (.553).
The Minutewomen (3-8, 0-1 in A-10) are coming off an 8-11 loss to St. Bonaventure on Friday. Led by Kathleen Typadis with 24 goals, UMass is returning 18 players from last year's squad that recorded a 5-12 record and finished seventh in the A-10 with a 1-6 mark.
The Spiders currently lead the Massachusetts-Richmond all-time series 4-2 and the Spiders have claimed wins in both the first and last two meetings, including a 10-8 victory in the Spiders' 2005 regular season finale.
Following Sunday's contest, the Spiders will continue A-10 play as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a contest with the Duquesne Dukes on April 14 at 4:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
