UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 11th-ranked Richmond women's lacrosse team clinched the 2006 Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title after dominating the league with a 6-1 record and setting a new program record of 14 wins on the season.
"I am so proud of this team for the accomplishments they have already obtained this season," stated head coach Sue Murphy. "This is our first A-10 regular season championship, so it is a very special one. However short lived, our focus goes to this weekend as the team is very excited to play for the A-10 Championship and the opportunity to fight for a berth to the NCAA tournament."
The Spiders, now 14-3 overall, are in the midst of their best season ever and have made distinct marks on the conference and on the country, from taking down No. 7 Virginia and winning 11-straight contests to being named A-10 regular season champions and individual Spiders receiving both A-10 and national recognition.
With its recent triumph over La Salle, the 2006 squad made its mark in the program's record book for the most wins in a season, breaking the previous record (12 wins) set by the 2002 squad.
Also, since opening the season, the Spiders have captured a combined total of nine A-10 Rookie and Player of the Week honors, as well as one Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week and one Honorable Mention honor, and one womenslacrosse.com honor roll.
In addition to ranking 11th in the nation, the Spiders also place seventh in the nation for win percentage (.813), 11th for scoring margin (4.44), 12th for scoring defense (8.38), and 13th for scoring offense (12.81). Additionally, Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg ranks third for save percentage (.556) and 10th for GAA (8.38).
The Spiders now have their sites set on capturing their second-straight A-10 Championship this weekend in Washington, D.C.
