UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Nicholas Battle, Tim Hightower and Sherman Logan all took part in the Gayton Elementary Field Day, Friday, May 12. The three Spider football players worked as volunteers in the "Orange Zone," and later posed for photos and autographs during the lunch session at the local elementary school.
Hightower took part in the "Chicken Soup" game in the Orange Zone. The elementary athletes' object was to mix up the chicken soup (foam noodles and rubber chickens on a parachute). Each student, and Hightower, found a spot around the parachute and moved the chute up and down as a team to mix up the chickens and noodle pieces in the middle of the chute without letting them come out of the bowl.
Logan helped the elementary athletes with the "Bulls Eye" competition using an inflatable velcro bulls-eye and velco-covered tennis balls. The students were split up into teams and worked to gather points by taking turns aiming for the center of the bulls-eye with their tennis balls.
Battle played a part in the "Shot-Put" contest. The game, played in a duck, duck ... goose, fashion included a beach ball that could be thrown at the goose when running around the circle. Once the goose is selected, they must run back to the spot without being tagged by the runner or being hit with beach ball (which the runner can throw at any time). If hit or tagged, that person had to sit in the middle of the circle until the next student gets tagged out.
After their zone's games were over, the football athletes signed autographs and took pictures with the elementary athletes who were ending their school year with a day of fun and athletic activities.
