Zeskind Breaks Career Hit Record; Spiders Fall At St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y. - Senior Ben Zeskind led-off the game with a single into centerfield to break the all-time career hits record of 307, but the Spiders could not rally from an 8-2 deficit to fall at St. Bonaventure Friday afternoon. The 8-2 loss, eliminated the Spiders from Atlantic 10 Tournament contention, and made their overall record 21-33 and 11-15 in the league. Freshman Ian Marshall will throw in the final game of the season for Richmond set for noon, May 20.
Sophomore Alex Hale was perfect in his first three innings of work, striking out three, as the Spiders took their lead in the second when they loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Victor Croglio broke the scoreless tie with a sac-fly to leftfield, scoring junior Matt McKenna, who led the inning off with a single.
As St. Bonaventure's starter Cody Vincent started to settle in, retiring nine-straight into the fifth, Hale gave up the lead. The Bonnies got the leadoff hitter on in the fourth and proceeded to score three thanks to a single, triple and a sacrifice-squeeze bunt.
The Spiders stranded one in the fifth, before SBU added its fourth in the bottom of the inning thanks to another sacrifice-squeeze bunt.
Richmond pulled within two in the sixth after McKenna singled in junior Vince Riggi from second. Riggi reached with two outs on a single down the leftfield line then moved to second on a passed ball.
Hale finished his outting retiring six-straight through seven. The Omaha, Neb., native allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings. The righthander fanned six in just his third loss in 10 total decisions.
Senior Derek Duclos came on in the eighth, but was not greeted well. The Bonnies singled to leadoff the inning, and after one out, loaded the bases on walks. SBU's Matt Mardeusz then increased the SBU lead to six runs with his fifth homerun of the season, a grand-slam to leftfield.
Richmond could not mount a comeback in the ninth, going down in order and ending the game 8-2.
Game Notes
-- Senior Ben Zeskind leadoff single in the first marked the 308th hit of his career, breaking the all-time mark of 307 held by David Reaver (2000-03). Zeskind finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and the first-inning single.
-- For the second-straight game Richmond outhit the Bonnies, 9-6.
-- Juniors Matt McKenna and Benji Marshall, along with Zeskind, ended the day with multiple-hit games.
