Men's Golf In 24th Place After Two Rounds Of NCAA East Regional Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Richmond men's golf team shot a 28-over-par 316 in the second round Friday and is in 24th place out of 27 teams at the 2006 NCAA East Regional Championship, being played at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.
Richmond will be teeing off the third and final round on Saturday beginning at 12:59 p.m.
The Spiders, who were seeded 24th out of 27 teams entering the tournament, are at 49-over-par 625 entering Saturday's final round. Richmond, which shot a 21-over 309 in the first round, trails 23rd place Maryland by four strokes.
"We obviously had a tough day today, the course was playing pretty tough," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We'll just have to go out tomorrow and try to finish off on the year on a high note."
Richmond sophomore Jordan Utley carded a 4-over-par 76 Friday on the par-72, 7,175-yard Lake Nona Golf Course, putting him in a tie for 50th out of 140 golfers at 6-over 150. Utley shot a 3-over 39 on the back nine and then a 1-over 37 on the front nine Friday.
Junior John Pelet shot a 6-over-par 78 in the second round and is tied for 105th at 13-over-par 157.
Freshman Tim Courtney birdied three of his last five holes, but five bogeys and three double bogeys led to an 8-over 80 on Friday. Courtney is tied for 118th at 15-over-par 159.
Senior Tyler Randol was 1-under through his first six holes Friday, but would finish the round at 10-over-par 82. He is at 17-over-par 161, tied for 126th along with sophomore Chris Bagley. Bagley shot a 12-over-par 84 on Friday.
The NCAA East Regional is one of three regionals being held this weekend - along with the Central and West. The top 10 teams in each regional, and the top two individuals not on advancing teams, earn bids to the 2006 NCAA National Championship to be held in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3.
This is Richmond's first NCAA Championship appearance since 2001 and the Spiders fourth in school history. In 1999, Richmond finished eighth at the East Regional to qualify for the school's only NCAA National appearance.
