UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After clinching the 2006 A-10 regular season title and earning its first A-10 Championship last year, the 11th-ranked Richmond women's lacrosse team will be going for its second-straight A-10 Title this weekend. The top-seeded Spiders will face fourth-seeded Massachusetts in the semifinals at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the Athletics Complex at Mount Vernon on the George Washington University campus.
Last year, the Spiders became the first No. 4 seed to win the conference championship when they topped Duquesne 10-8 in the title contest.
This year, the Spiders, who finished 14-3 overall and clinched the A-10 regular season title with a 6-1 league mark, will face UMass in the opening round of the tournament.
The Spiders are currently in the midst of their best season yet, with a program best 14 wins, an A-10 regular season title, an 11-game win streak earlier in the season, and a five-week stint in the Top 10.
The Minutewomen (7-10 overall and 4-3 in the A-10) are coming off two big wins over the weekend, including a 12-11 win in double-overtime to Duquesne and an 11-10 win at George Washington, that slipped them into the fourth seed.
The Spiders lead the UMass-Richmond series 5-2 and have won the last three meetings between the two teams, including a 15-5 victory over the Minutewomen earlier this season at First Market Stadium where seniors Caroline McGuire and Sara Allen each netted four goals to lead their team to a dominating 10-goal win over UMass.
Pending a win on Friday, the Spiders will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Atlantic 10 champion will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
