Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener To No. 18 West Virginia; Faces Rutgers On Sunday

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers at the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational on Friday night.
West Virginia's Kim Bonilla put in the first goal at the 8:16 mark from 12 yards out and teammate Deanna Everrett scored two second-half goals for the Mountaineers to lead her team to a 3-0 advantage, the first time West Virginia has defeated Richmond.
Everrett's first goal came unassisted just over ten minutes into the second half and the second was assisted by Bonilla just six minutes later.
Richmond sophomore Kate Hudson finished the game with three saves in goal, while Lana Bannerman garnered three saves for the Mountaineers.
The Spiders will continue action on Sunday as they face Rutgers at 11:00 a.m. at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Rutgers, who finished the 2005 season with a 10-9-2 mark and a 4th seed in the Big East Conference, played the James Madison Dukes in its season opener on Friday night. The Spiders hold a 1-0 advantage in the Richmond-Rutgers series after taking a 2-1 win over the Scarlet Knights in the 2000 Rutgers Doubletree Classic.
