Men's Golf Takes 14th At Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout

RUTHER GLEN, Va. - The Richmond men's golf team opened the 2006-07 season with a 14th place finish at the Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout.
The Spiders were missing two returnees off of last year's NCAA Tournament team and shot a 42-over-par 906 after rounds of 298, 303, 305.
"It was the first tournament and there was obviously some rust," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "The past two days highlighted our weaknesses and showed us what we need to practice for the next event."
Richmond's Jordan Utley shot a 1-under-par 71 in Tuesday's final round to finish the tournament at 4-over 220 and in a tie for 30th place. Utley shot a 2-over 74 in the first round and a 75 in the second round.
Sophomore Grant Rafield, playing as an individual in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 1-over 73 to finish the tournament at 8-over 224 in a tie for 44th.
Richmond senior John Pelet shot an opening round 2-under-par 70, but shot 78 and 80 in the second and third rounds to finish tied for 59th at 12-over 228.
Freshman Hunter Townsend, playing in his first collegiate tourney, tied for 62nd at 13-over 229. Townsend shot a 79 in the first round, even-par 72 in the second round and shot a 6-over-par 78 in the final round. Townsend had a few tough holes, but did birdie three-straight holes in the last round and four of five in one stretch.
Junior Billy Hanes shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday to finish at 230 (75-79-76) in a tie for 67th. Junior Lawrence Lessing shot a 243 (84-78-81).
Richmond was playing without junior Chris Bagley, who who is out with an injury, and sophomore Tim Courtney, who did not qualify for the tournament. Both players were starters on last year's NCAA Tournament team.
Richmond will get right back at it next Monday and Tuesday at the Joe Agee Invitational at Stonehouse Golf Club in Toano, Va.
