UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team fell short to the Saint Joseph's Hawks in overtime in its Atlantic 10 opener on Friday night at First Market Stadium. Although the Spiders dominated with a 17-8 shot advantage over the Hawks, the Hawks were able to slip in a goal in the 95th minute to take the 1-0 victory.
"I'm extremely proud of our team," said head coach Peter Albright. "Obviously, we've had a tough first half of the season. To come out and play with the intensity and type of quality that we played with; that's just a shame how it ended."
The Spiders and the Hawks played through a fairly even battle in the first half, with both teams enduring a close encounter. Just after a Hawks' player headed the ball off the crossbar, Richmond's Kristin Runey blasted a shot to the right side that the Hawks' keeper was just able to get her hands on.
The Spiders dominated the second half, outshooting the Hawks 8-2; however, neither team was able to convert their opportunities and they headed into overtime.
After almost five minutes into the overtime had passed, Megan Schutt dribbled on the left side and laid the ball off to teammate Nancy Cook, who then slid the ball past the Spider keeper for the game-winner.
"We matched up to them," continued Albright. "They are a senior dominated team. They have a lot of A-10 All-Conference players and we played them off the field."
Richmond's Kate Hudson registered two saves in goal for the Spiders, while Jen Kuhn recorded four saves throughout the contest for Saint Joseph's (4-6-0, 1-0-0 in A-10).
"Our girls have not quit," concluded Albright. "They are fighting harder than they were earlier in the season and that attributes a lot to their character."
The Spiders (0-8-2, 0-1-0 in A-10) will continue A-10 action this Sunday as they host the Temple Owls (3-6-0) at 1:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium.
