UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Adam Goloboski and redshirt-freshman Eric Ward were each honored as weekly All-Conference performers, Atlantic 10 officials announced Sunday. Goloboski, a Hereford, Md., native, was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Ward, a native of Atlanta, Ga., garnered Rookie of the Week honors. Both student-athletes were instrumental in the Spiders' 13-0 win, Sept. 2, at Duke to open the 2006 season.
Goloboski, a preseason All-American by I-AA.org, as well as a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection, garnered eight total tackles in the Spiders' shutout road win at Division I Duke. The senior linebacker made one stop for a loss of two yards, forced a fumble and blocked a Blue Devil field goal attempt late in the second quarter. Richmond's defense earned its first shutout since late in the 2004 season, and led the squad to its first win over a Division I opponent since the 2000 season.
Ward, in his first career start, threw for 120 yards (11-for-23) and one touchdown, a 16-yard screen pass to junior Arman Shields. The redshirt-freshman played the entire contest without a turnover, and helped Richmond top an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent for the first time since 1978.
The Spiders are in the midst of a bye week, before they will host VMI, Saturday, Sept. 16 at UR Stadium. Kickoff for the game held during the University of Richmond's Family Weekend is slated for 3 p.m. Tickets to see the 15th-ranked Spiders and their Commonwealth rival VMI, as well as all Richmond home games, are available online at RichmondSpiders.com, calling 1-877-SPIDER-1 or visiting the Robins Center ticket office.
